Organic Costa Rica - Finca Amistad

Hacienda la Amistad, located in Coto Brus, Puntarenas, Costa Rica, is owned and operated by Roberto Montero, a third-generation coffee farmer. His grandfather arrived in the area in the early 1900s to survey the Costa Rica-Panama border. He later purchased over 10,000 hectares of land and began cultivating coffee. Roberto’s family returned 6,000 hectares to the government for La Amistad International Park, the largest natural reserve in Central America. Only 300 hectares are used for coffee, while the rest is preserved forest teeming with wildlife.

Roberto’s commitment to organic farming aligns with his dedication to his community. During the coffee harvest, he provides housing and free medical care to seasonal pickers, mostly indigenous people from Panama. He also employs over 100 full-time workers from Las Mellizas in coffee cultivation and his year-round dried fruit operation. Roberto hosts an annual employee celebration and distributes school supplies to their children before school starts.
